2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Pace Car at Indy 500

The all-new, seventh-generation 2014 Corvette Stingray will serve as the Indianapolis 500 Pace Car, leading the field of Indy cars at the 97th running of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” on Sunday, May 26, 2013, at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

This Indy 500 race marks a record 12th time the Corvette has served as the Pace Car, starting in 1978, extending a legacy at the Brickyard that dates to the racetrack's early days.

Decked out in Laguna Blue Tintcoat with official Indianapolis 500 graphics on the doors, the Corvette Stingray Pace Car differs from production models with only track-mandated safety features and strobe lights. No powertrain upgrades are required to run in front of the IndyCar pack, thanks to its all-new 6.2L LT1 engine, which features advanced technologies including direct fuel injection, continuously variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation). They help produce an estimated 450 horsepower more efficiently.

Deterring Vehicle Theft

The Sentry Key® engine immobilizer prevents the Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited from being started without the owner's key. The key comes with a small, embedded chip that, when inserted in the ignition, connects with the engine and allows it to start. If no connection is made, or another key is inserted, the Wrangler won't start.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 2013 infographic on vehicle theft prevention, a motor vehicle is stolen every 43 seconds in the U.S., and nearly 73% of all motor vehicles reported stolen are passenger cars.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) offers Hot Wheels, an interactive, online tool consumers can use to view vehicle theft rates, vehicle types and vehicle model years by each state. The NICB recommends the "layered protection" approach to deterring vehicle theft. Vehicle owners have a range of options to deter thieves from stealing vehicles and their contents.

Vehicle Security Systems

Most late-model vehicles, such as the 2013 Honda Fit and the 2014 Jeep® Grand Cherokee Unlimited, come standard with theft-deterrent systems, or the sytems are inexpensive to purchase, compared to the cost of a stolen vehicle or component. When considering an vehicle security system, consumers can choose a passive or active anti-theft system.

1. Passive devices automatically arm themselves when the vehicle is turned off, the ignition key is removed, or a door is shut. No additional action is required.
2. Active devices require the driver to perform a physical action, such as placing a "lock" on a steering wheel. The physical action must be repeated every time the anti-theft device is set or it will not function.

Anti-theft devices include:

• aubible sensor alarms and visible alarms and warning systems;
• locking mechanisms;
• immobilizing systems and devices, such as a smart key with a built-in transponder that sends a code to the electronic control unit. (If the key code and the code in the electronic control unit agree, the engine will start.)
• wireless ignition authentication;
• starter, ignition and fuel disablers/cutoff/kill switches;
• vehicle tracking and recovery devices combining GPS, transmitter or other technologies.

Many insurance companies recommend purchasing vehicle alarms and even offer discounts to owners who equip their vehicles with anti-theft devices.

Tips to Arm Drivers and Combat Vehicle Theft

Common sense can be the best vehicle theft deterrent.

• Never leave a vehicle while it is running; always remove keys from the vehicle's ignition. Leaving the engine on during a quick dash into a convenience store, for example, can give a thief time to steal a vehicle.
• Never leave keys inside a vehicle. Whether visible or not, leaving a key -- even a spare key -- inside the vehicle presents an opportunity for thieves.
• When parking vehicles, particularly at night, drivers should park in well-lit, populated areas.
• If parking on the street or an incline, drivers should leave cars in "park" or in gear with the wheels turned toward the curb so towing is more difficult. Setting the emergency brake also makes towing more difficult.
• Lock all doors -- even while driving.
• Completely close all windows -- including the sunroof and moonroof -- when a vehicle is unattended.
• When possible, drivers should park vehicles in brightly lit areas. Light deters criminals.
• When parking in a home garage, drivers should ensure the garage is secure. Keys should not be stored in the garage.
• Never leave valuables in sight. Charging devices, GPS stands and even wires used to connect a smartphone or laptop should be securely stored out of sight. Leaving them in a visible location may give a thief the idea that the device that goes with the wires may be hidden in under the seat, in a console or glove compartment or the truck. If conditions are right, some thieves won't hestitate to break glass to enter a vehicle and gain access to the trunk compartment or other storage areas within the vehicle.
• If desperate enough, some thieves will even break into a vehicle just to steal spare change that is visible from the outside. Other items popular with thieves include vehicle parts; catalytic converters; wheel covers; electronic devices, such as smartphones, GPS units and laptops; purses and bags.
• Beware for the “bump-and-rob” move; carjackers may intentionally bump a car from the rear and then steal it when the driver gets out to examine the damage.
• If confronted by a carjacker, do not resist.Vehicles are replaceable; a life is not.
• Do not leave the vehicle registration or title in the vehicle.
• Apply theft deterrent decals to vehicle windows so thieves can see the car is protected.

Toyota Issues FJ Cruiser Recall for Model Years 2007-2013

Toyota is issuing recalls for certain Toyota FJ Cruiser SUVs, model years 2007 through 2013, for auxiliary headlights that may be too bright.

A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website puts the number of vehicles potentially affected in the U.S. at 11,489. Affected vehicles were built from January 25, 2006 through February 23, 2013, and were equipped with Toyota Auxiliary Driving Lamp Kits mounted to the front bumper.

The lamp assemblies on affected FJ Cruiser vehicles include 55 watt bulbs. According to the NHTSA bulletin, due to the wattage on these bulbs and the mounting angle on the front bumper, the combination of the auxiliary lights and the vehicle's upper beam headlamps are too bright and exceed maximum light output allowed for an upper beam headlamp. Lights that are too bright result in increased glare for oncoming traffic, thus increasing vehicle crash risk. The affected vehicles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, "Lamps, reflective devices and associated equipment."

According to Toyota, only FJ Cruisers with Auxiliary Driving Lamp Kits are affected. Auxiliary Driving Lamp Kits were not specified as accessories for any other Toyota model. The problem was detected during audit testing of the Auxiliary Driving Lamp Kits in mid-April 2013.

Toyota will notify owners and dealers will replace the 55 watt bulbs with 35 watt bulbs and the mounting brackets replaced with ones that reorient the bulbs so that photometric values are within the standard. The service will be performed at no charge.

The Toyota safety recall is expected to begin in late May 2013. In the meantime, owners of 2007 through 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser SUVs with any questions or concerns may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331. (Reference the NHTSA campaign ID No. 13V163000.) Honda Recalls 2012-2013 Fit Sport, CR-V and Odyssey

2012-2013 Honda Fit Sport Recall

Honda will voluntarily recall 43,782 model-year 2012-2013 Fit Sport vehicles in the United States to update the Vehicle Stability Assist system software, free of charge. The Vehicle Stability Assist system on certain 2012-2013 model year Honda Fit Sport vehicles equipped with certain tires may allow yaw rates that exceed certain U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards requirements. This issue was discovered during U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards compliance testing, and Honda is not aware of any related crashes or injuries.

Honda is announcing this recall to encourage owners of all affected vehicles to take their vehicles to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda. Mailed notification to customers will begin in mid-May, 2013. In addition to contacting customers by mail, at that time, owners of these vehicles will be able to determine if their vehicles require repair by going to www.recalls.honda.com.

2012-2013 Honda CR-V and Odyssey Recall

American Honda will recall approximately 128,000 Honda CR-V SUVs and 59,000 Honda Odyssey vans from the 2012-2013 model years in the U.S. to replace a component of the brake shift interlock system in these vehicles. In sub-freezing temperatures after initial use of the vehicle's gear-shift mechanism, it may be possible to shift the vehicle's transmission out of the Park position without depressing the brake pedal. No customer complaints, crashes or injuries have been reported related to this issue, which was discovered during an internal investigation.

Honda is announcing this recall to encourage owners of all affected vehicles to take their vehicles to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from American Honda. Mailed notification to customers will be sent in mid-May 2013. In addition to contacting customers by mail, at that time, owners of vehicles from the affected model years will be able to determine if their vehicles require repair by going online to www.recalls.honda.com or by calling 800-999-1009 for Honda owners or 800-382-2238 for Acura owners, and selecting option 4.
